Add a second LCD to your Nexus Android Phone
Date Posted:20 July 2012
Designed for use with a Google Nexus One Android phone, this secondary LCD project is very useful. It allows the display of the time and sender of the last received SMS message. Therefore it's ideal for playing addictive games like "Draw Something" and not missing out on that important SMS from the better half or losing track of the train. The hardware comprises of an Arduino with USB host shield, a 16x2 character LCD module and related circuitry.
Why someone hasn't thought of this already is beyond us, and is a great idea. To get started with your own version, you can download the coad and instructions from here. If you already have an Arduino Uno-compatible board, we have the USB Host Shield, a variety of LCD modules and a wide range of electronics components to get you started. Or if you are going to dedicate a new Arduino board to the project, save time and money by using the Freetronics USBDroid:
The USBDroid combines the functionality of the Arduino Uno-compatible Freetronics Eleven along with a USB host-mode controller and a microSD memory card slot all merged together into a single, integrated board that is 100% Arduino compatible. This is the ideal platform for developing peripherals or projects based around Android devices with ADK (Android Developer Kit) functionality, but without requiring a USB host controller shield stacked onto an Arduino.
